What to Keep in Mind

Size

The most important thing to keep in mind while bra shopping is finding your correct size. Straps slipping or digging into your shoulders, cup overflow, and gaping are all common signs that you are wearing the wrong size. Sometimes the bra was the correct size when you first bought it, but wear and tear as well as your own body changing can leave you with an ill-fitting bra. That's why , co-founder and chief creative officer of bra company , recommends replacing your bras every six months to a year, depending on how often you wear them. 
When you are ready to buy a new bra, take the time to measure yourself first. Many brands, like ThirdLove, offer that guide you through the process of measuring your band and cap size. 

Cups

Full coverage cups generally offer the most support for plus-sizes. However breasts come in different shapes as well as sizes, and knowing your breast shape can help you find the best bra. Cohen breaks down the common breasts shapes and the ideal cups for each: 

Asymmetrical: One breast is larger than the other.
Try: A bra that can give you an instant lift but also the option to incorporate an insert on one side to give your smaller boob a boost.

Bell: Breasts are slimmer at the top and fullter at the bottom. 
Try: A full coverage bra that features wider, memory foam straps that provide support but never dig in.

Relaxed: Breasts have lax tissue and nipples pointing downward.
Try: A balconette style bra that has a slightly shorter cup for more fullness at the top.

East West: Breasts have nipples that point to the east and west, creating wide-set breasts.
Try: If you are struggling to achieve cleavage with certain tops, look for full coverage bras that will help bring your breasts up and together.

Round: Breasts are symmetrical all around.
Try: While most styles may work for your shape, try a wireless bra for days when you want light support or balconette style when you want an ultra-flattering fit.

Band & Straps

Cohen recommends looking for bras with a wide band for more support as well as a smoothing effect, especially in the back. The same goes with straps — wider straps better distribute weight, so they don't dig into your shoulders. Some styles even use memory foam in the straps for a customized fit and comfort.

Material

Choosing between different materials comes down to your comfort preferences and style needs. Cohen says cotton is ideal when you want your bra to blend seamlessly under a tee while satin and lace create a sultry look. Mesh can add breathability, even if it's only incorporated in certain portions of the bra like the panels. Working out? Look for breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics like nylon and spandex for sports bras.  

Your Questions, Answered

Can I wear a wireless bra if I have a large chest?

Cohen has seen a significant shift towards wireless bras in recent years as customers prioritize comfort. More brands are designing wireless bras that offer just as much support as their underwire counterparts. 
"Some features to look for in a wireless bra that will be most supportive for a larger breast size include wide straps, removable cups for definition and coverage, and a smoothing fit that doesn't pinch, squash, or squeeze," says Cohen. 

How do I wear a strapless bra without it falling down? 

Likewise, strapless bras have come a long way in being able to support larger sizes. The secret to making sure your strapless bra stays put is to look for these key features. 

"The taller the back closure is, the wider the band will be. A wider band will provide more support and smoothing properties than a narrow band," says Cohen. "Sometimes strapless bras can have a plunging neckline — I recommend a balconette shaped cup that is not too plunging at the neckline for larger cup sizes."
Yet a strapless bra doesn't have to be uncomfortable to hold you up. "There's a misconception that strapless bras need to be uncomfortably tight. While the support comes from the band, it shouldn't be so tight that it's painful," says Cohen. "Look for stretchy fabrics, side boning, and a wider smoothing band to get your most comfortable fit."  

What's the best plus-size sports bra?

Whether your workout consists of cardio, strength training, or both, you want a sports bra that will reduce bounce without limiting your range of motion. founded the lingerie company out of her own frustration as a 32E bra shopper. She once told InStyle what she looks for in bras to support her curves.

"With sport bras, you want one that has enough space and isn't too constricting. The idea isn't to flatten your chest as much as possible, but rather provide extra support and stability for your workout," says Tolliver. "Look for compression and molded cups, which will give you the most support and has the added benefit of preventing the dreaded uni-boob."
