This Summer's Biggest Hair Color Trend Is So Unexpected
These shades are as red hot as the weather.
Summer brings the annual itch to go a few shades lighter with your hair color. And while golden ombré highlights and rose gold hair are always going to be season staples, this summer's biggest hair color trend is bold, bright, and literally red hot.
Celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Ciara, and Sophie Turner have all dyed their hair various shades of vibrant, fiery red going into the season. So yeah, after a year and some months of not being able to go to the salon as often as in the "before times," red hair is entering the chat for summer 2021 because it's a bold, dramatic change for blondes and brunettes.
"These red/ginger tones are trending because it's something different - especially ginger, which is similar to peach in some cases," says , Matrix hair ambassador. "It's a tone that is new and fresh for the eyes to see. It also doesn't require a lot of compromising of the hair to achieve and can be easy to maintain as well."
If you want to go red, Gilmore says to keep the undertones of the shades in mind when choosing your shade. He says to consider your skin tone and eye color when choosing the right shade as well. "By looking at undertones, you can see if someone is better suited with a deeper dark tone of red or a lighter peach or ginger tone," Gilmore explains. "The good thing is that most people look great with a variety of different shades of reds - dark or light."
While red is a bold, eye-catching hair color, it can also fade faster than blonde and brunette shades. To keep red hair looking vibrant and fresh, cut back on washing your hair, when possible. "Instead of every day, maybe try washing your hair every third day," says Gilmore. "It allows the hair to collect a little bit of oil, which in turn actually helps to protect the hair."
Gilmore recommends to clients who color their hair because "it contains sulfate-free technology that gently cleanses to maintain vibrancy of fast-fading hair colors from fading prematurely."
For another layer of protection, use a primer that offers UV protection because the sun can contribute to fading, too. Gilmore is a fan of , which shields hair from UV rays and heat from hot tools.

The beauty of this hair color trend is that it doesn't have to die once summer is over. Red can easily transition into the fall season, and adding low lights to break up any light faded pieces will give your color a deeper, richer look. Alternatively, asking your colorist to apply a gloss or glaze will give your hair hair added richness and dimension.
